Statistics at Stockport School

Our mission is to support our students in not only improving their Mathematical skills, but also provide them with a platform to build from across the curriculum at Stockport School and build upon it post-16. With statistics and data becoming more and more prominent in the world around us, this highly motivating course is designed and delivered to give students the knowledge and skills needed to use Statistics in further education and beyond.

GCSE Statistics is an option for all students when they begin their options process and this will provide them with a fantastic opportunity to develop their data collection, processing, representing, analysis and interpretation in an engaging, contextual and tangible course. There is a particular focus on real-life problems using real-life data.

GCSE Statistics is delivered for both higher and foundation tier students in Year 10. Those who choose GCSE Statistics as an option will study the Higher Tier course.

What will be studied?

There are 8 units to be studied in GCSE Statistics. The first 3 units, in particular, focus on the aforementioned "Data Handling Cycle".

  • Unit 1: Collection of Data
  • Unit 2: Processing and Representing Data
  • Unit 3: Summarising Data
  • Unit 4: Scatter Diagrams and Correlation
  • Unit 5: Time Series
  • Unit 6: Probability
  • Unit 7: Index Numbers
  • Unit 8: Probability Distributions (Higher Only)

Assessment

There are 2 written exams taken at the end of Year 11.

  • 2x 1 hour 30 minutes exams (Calculator allowed)

There will also be regular assessments during lesson time at the end of each unit studies. Students will also sit mock exams at the end of year 10 and during year 11.

Scheme of Work

Copies of the scheme of work for both tiers can be found below:

Homework

Homework is set in line with school policy for KS4 students.

The compulsory homework will usually be on a yellow paper sheet and will consist of exam questions relating to the most recent topic. This should take around 15-20 minutes.

For extra credit in Statistics, students can engage with our revision workbook, focussing on topics that they feel they need extra practice on. This is particularly useful before assessments. This can be found below:

    Enrichment and other opportunities

Students will be given a fortnightly opportunity to attend Statistics enrichment after school. Here, they will focus on revising and extending topics that have been taught during lesson time. There will be a focus on exam-type questions and give the opportunity to develop fluency with exam technique.

In June 2024, the Maths and Statistics department ran a joint trip Aquinas college for our high prior attaining students to explore options in Maths and Statistics post-16. This included looking at A-Level Mathematics, A-Level Further Mathematics, A-Level Statistics and Core Maths.
