Our Vision

The aim of PSHE lessons at Stockport School is to help the students to become young adults who have all the skills needed for their future lives and make decisions in line with their own values.

We are here to prepare them for modern day living and the world after Stockport School.

Stockport School is part of the curriculum that helps students explore the ideas around personal, social, health and economic education. Our PSHE curriculum welcomes a variety of topics but mainly focuses on three main areas.

  • Relationships-Students will explore and learn about different types of relationships (friendships, romantic, intimate) and the relevant laws around relationships, such as consent. We talk about healthy and unhealthy relationships and how to spot the warning signs. Students also gather knowledge on harmful sexual behaviours from peers and strangers. Students learn how to know what is acceptable and what is not and how to deal with these types of situations.
  • Health-Students learn about mental health and mental wellbeing and how important it is to keep good mental health. There are areas in which we also talk about physical health. In form sessions students will explore a variety of ways to keep a good positive mindset and how to keep healthy physically by exploring a healthy lifestyle (healthy eating, exercise, hygiene). In lesson time we also focus on the impact of smoking, vaping, drugs and alcohol and how students can protect themselves from these and make informed choices. Students also explore the impact of social media in lessons and how this can have a major effect on them and their life choices.
  • Living in the wider world-Students explore a variety of lessons as part of the PSHE rotation. They will focus on finance, money issues and debt, plus they will have careers lessons which will help them make informed choices for life after Stockport School.

Key Stage 4

During Year 10 and 11, students capitalise on the spiral curriculum taught in previous years. Students draw on their knowledge of the potential dangers challenging a healthy life (drugs and alcohol usage, sexually transmitted infections, smoking, diet, etc) financial awareness, crime and punishment, social issues, family differences, conforming to peer pressure and lifesaving skills.

Year 10 students then study a programme of “minimising the risk” of a teenager’s lifestyle. By raising awareness of potential situations and discussing the consequences, students reinforce positive attitudes and role play scenarios designed to rehearse healthy lifestyle decisions.

As part of the PSHE rotation years 10 and 11 gain knowledge from other subject areas such as Finance, Careers, Literacy and Study Skills.
